...and pigs might swim!

17 May 2015 | Anchored at Big Majors Spot, near Staniel Cay, Exhumas

Photo shows a pig swimming out to the boat for food!

Sailed around to Big Majors Spot on Saturday. We were just leaving Black Point when the fast grey launch of the Royal Bahamas Defence Force came zooming up and said they wanted to board. They told us to keep moving – which was kind of difficult as I was on the helm and was Kit navigating us around the shallow bank!

Two officers came on board and we somehow managed to continue whilst Kit produced our papers and Cruising Permit, answered loads if questions (Any guns on board? How many life jackets? How many flares? Liferaft in service date? etc.), and kept us off the banks! They were polite and courteous but we were relieved when they were satisfied that we're not drug/arms/people smuggling and left so we could find our way into deeper water. Enough excitement for one day!

Big Majors is a beautiful spot and we anchored off ‘Pig’ Beach. The little town on Staniel Cay used to have a pig problem – they smelled and attracted flies. So the pigs were deported to their own desert island (Big Majors Spot) where they now flourish and can smell as much as they like! Cruisers feed the pigs their scrap food and the pigs keep the cruisers entertained. The pigs are so keen to get the food that they swim out to the boats – so they are actually not so smelly now! They are also quite a size!
