Day 2 dawned with Steen at the helm, still motoring, no wind but rising swells, making the side-to-side motion somewhat uncomfortable.
Conditions: Wind - west 5-8 knots Swell - west, moderate Boat Speed - 3.5 knots under mail and drifter
Forgotten note from Day 1-A log: The Autohelm 4000 was not working overnight, so Steen and I hand-steered from dusk to dawn and into the noon hour. Steen dismantled the autohelm today, and found the belt to be more disintegrated than we had previously thought. [We only use the electric autohelm when we are motoring, with no wind, since our wind vane cannot work under those conditions].
By 0900, we cut the engine to preserve fuel and drifted and bobbed for 3 1/2 hours until a light afternoon shore breeze finally picked up. (As I understand it... these shore breezes are thermally generated, meaning they are caused by the heat of the land, which logically is hottest in the afternoon; this heat over land, and cool air over sea, creates a temporary barometric pressure difference, which is what causes wind; so by evening, when the land cools down, the thermally generated winds die down.) Of course, not all wind is thermally generated, thank goodness.
At 1230, Steen set the main sail and the drifter, and we proceeded at about 3.5 knots, on a course of 180 to 200W; a little more south than we would like, but the breeze is out of the west, so this is the best we can do for now.
The crew is fine; no seasickness - we are just getting back into the rythym of the sea.
