More Tourists

As the weather improved so did the number of visitors to Whitehaven. High speed people movers race in each day from Hamilton Island and drop their cargo (complete with pop up sun shades and volley ball nets) on the beach for a few hours. At dusk, they disappear and we have it all to ourselves because the charter boats still haven't started coming.

Actually there are some tourists but not the usual kind. These kids were camped in the bottom corner of the beach, emerged in the morning and then paddled off into the wide blue yonder.

The yacht in the background is 'Boree' which is crewed by a delightful German couple Ingee and Bert who we met in Bundaberg last year when they came in on the 'Port to Port' rally. It's a beautiful American built boat, 50' long with everything for luxury ocean cruising. Bert and Ingee describe themselves as 'homeless boat bums' and have been sailing the Pacific and Australian Coast (as far west as the Kimberleys) for the last 10 years. They plan to head off to Asia in 12 months time but are spending this year coastal cruising Qld, so we look forward to 'bumping' into them occasionally.

Where are all the Charter Boats??

This is Whitehaven Beach one of the most popular destinations in the Whitsundays...and there's nobody here. We can't believe it. Apart from being beautiful, with its long white silica beach, pretty inland walks and gorgeous blue water, it is also the perfect anchorage for the 15-20 knot south westerlies we're expecting, but there are no tourists!!
