Savannah, again.
22 March 2017 | Isle of Hope Marina, Savannah, GA
We spent last night in the middle of a nowhere Georgia salt grass swamp. Dropped the anchor at about 4:00pm and let things settle. Breeze of 13+kts. in the early evening, dropping off to dead calm through the night. The temperature dropped into the 50's so the cabin was cool. we weighed anchor at 8:00am and continued on north.
Most of what we can see as we travel the ICW through Georgia is salt grass with very little population. The ICW, for the most part, has good water - anywhere from 15 to 50'. But, Georgia does not care to dredge and so there are area you have to wait for a rising tide, or high, tide to get through. We draw 5' and so we are careful to watch for shoals, especially those that seem to move from and/or grow from year to year. Just before Savannah there is a section, about 1.5 miles long that we could not get through without a high tide. Hell's Gate is also very narrow - and of course there is a bend in the middle. We also had a strong breeze and gusts as we drove through - I am not sure I took a breath for the whole stretch.
We were docked at Isle of Hope Marina, just south of Savannah by 4:30. The folks here are terrific. They have a loaner car (an ancient Honda Civic) that we used to go to a nearby restaurant. Tomorrow we clean the boat, grade a few papers, and do some laundry.
