The Nursery

13 June 2013
The rangers dig a hole 92cm deep, which is the same as the chamber in the original turtle nests and ensures that the temperature will be constant for the entire incubation period of approximately 2 months. The wire netting is to prevent the crabs from getting at the eggs before they hatch. There have been 900 hundred nests since the beginning of the year.
If the turtles hatch during the day they are kept in a container until nightfall, less preditors & hopefully a better chance of survival. Even so the ghost crabs still get some of them. They chop their heads off! Gruesome!
Sadly as we all know not many survive and although here and on other islands in Malaysia the effort is being made there is still the major problem of nets & worse still plastic. The young turtles feed on jellyfish and unfortunately they can’t tell the difference between plastic & jelly fish so plenty are dying from eating the wrong thing. And there sure is plenty of plastic in the sea for them to dine on!!!
