Dixon Entrance Crossing

05 June 2014 | Ketchikan
Ron/sunny
We decided to leave PR this morning at 5am while we have favorable weather. We had planned to go to Dundas Island unless Dixon Entrance was calm enough to cross. Winds were 10-15 kts when we left PR, but diminished within an hour after leave Venn Passage. We arrived at Dundas Island at 9am, and there was no way we were stopping, so we pressed on to Alaska. At 10:15 we crossed into Alaskan waters and got a time zone change. We are now on Alaska Daylight Time. So we are an hour earlier than Seattle.
When we were in Butedale we expected a ten boat flotilla (Waggoner Cruising Group) to arrive later that day. The never showed up, but they arrive in PR the day after we did. They arrived yesterday in Ketchikan. We hope they move on so we aren't following them everywhere since they tend to fill up guest moorage. We got the last slip here in Thomas Basin in downtown Ketchikan. Moorage at PRRYC was scarce once they arrived. They are being led by the editor of Waggoner's Cruising Guide.
After entering Revillagigedo Channel we saw a group of pacfic whiteside dolphins. Then as we entered Tongass Narrows outside Ketchikan we saw several orcas cruising along the shore just a couple hundred yards away.
Thanks to everyone who are leaving comments on our blog! We really appreciate it. We hope our blog convinces you to make this trip! All is well.
We plan to stay here a couple of days if we can continue to secure moorage here in this marina. Our next planned stop is Meyers Chuck about 26 miles further along.
The picture is Willie and I about to enjoy our crab stuffed halibut and grilled zucchini. Oh, did I mention that I caught a 50lb halibut last week?? Lol!
