Warm Springs Cove Baranof
30 June 2017 | Warm Springs Baranof
We arrived in Warm Springs Cove around 1030 and it looked like the pier was completely full of fishing boats. It didn't look like we were going to find moorage, but as we got closer we saw an empty section of pier on the inside. We could tell how long it was so we slowly closed in on it. A guy came out and told us we had plenty of room! The spot was 40 ft so we tied up. We walked up to the bathhouses and Ron decided to go ahead and jump in. Andrew offered to go back to the boat to get my towel. After my hot bath we had lunch and Andrew and Steve hit the hot tubs. Later in the afternoon we hiked up to the hot springs by the waterfall. After about 20 min there, we hiked up to the lake with our fishing pole. We caught a small cutthroat trout, which was too small to keep. After dinner, we hit the hot tubs again. We decided to spend an extra night. The next morning started with a dip in the hot tubs! We went back up to the lake to fish again. Andrew stayed on the boat to do some watercolors. He painted a beautiful picture of Cosmos Cove. Steve and I hooked another couple of small cutthroat trouts but nothing else.
Before leaving the next morning, Andrew and Steve got up early and hit the hot tubs one more time.
We talked to one of the fishermen on the dock about the whales. He said the number of whales has doubled in the last ten years, from an estimated 15000 to 30,000! They said one punched a hole right through his net. They are wreaking havoc on the salmon and herring stocks.
