Wrangell, AK and Zimovia Strait
05 July 2017 | Wrangell
Overcast and rain
We arrived in Wrangell and tied up in the Reliance Harbor downtown. We immediately proceeded to the Stikine Inn for a Calamari lunch (crispy). We toured the small town, purchased a few items in the grocery store and headed back to the boat. We finished up the leftover Etouffee for dinner. We watch a couple episodes of Victory at Sea before retiring.
We left Wrangell after breakfast and headed for Zimovia Strait. It was a very low ceiling and a steady drizzle. We put out the downrigger to troll for salmon for about an hour. We were able to foul it in a commercial crab pot. After wrestling with it for about 15 minutes we were able to clear it and recover all of our gear! Phew!! We noticed all of Zimovia Strait was completely covered with commercial crab pots and it was like running a gauntlet to avoid them. We anchored in Zimovia Cove and counted about a dozen crab pots along the banks. We still put out pots out near where we were successful on the northbound trip. Andrew checked the pots about 9 pm and we got our limit of three crabs in the first pot. We rebaited it and put it back down. We checked them again the next morning and had 4 that were legal, so we kept the three largest ones. We then retrieved the anchor and stowed the dinghy and headed to Meyers Chuck on Clarence Strait.
