Nannuk Harbor
Richard
Sun Aug 22 10:00:00 EDT 2010

We anchored in Nannuk Harbor on Baffin Island. Nannuk means polar bear in Inuktitut, so we expected we would see some. Not sure if the polar bears will be visible in this picture after it is reduced for transmission by satellite phone, but there are two of them in the picture, on the right side of the river, where the river first turns around a rocky point.

Baffin Island is well north of the treeline, so there is rock visible everywhere, with small amounts of vegetation, mostly mosses, but also some blueberries. It was too cold for mosquitoes, which was nice for us, though there were some other flying, biting insects to remind us that it was still summer.

We left Labrador and crossed to Baffin Island in mostly foggy conditions. Fog is common in summer, when SE and E winds picking up a lot of moisture from the Labrador Sea.

Growlers are small pieces of ice--too small to pick up on radar, and too small to see from very far away if there are waves. Growlers are named for the sound made by the hull scraping against them if hit.

Hola Richard,
what are you trying to do? Hiding from the icebergs?
We following with great interest your adventures and wish you always fair winds, and somebody else than yourself to go up the mast and fix the rigging.
Hope very much that you did not need your old wire???
It’s now a brand new ( well, nearly new) backstay on Vanoc. Many thanks again!
We are still in Buenos Aires, enjoying the opera and concert season. This week it’s the tango festival.
Next week we will “follow you north” to Uruguay. Just to keep the customs happy!
Good luck, with hugs and besos Ulla and Jo

From left to right, myself, Lucas, Yvonne and Sarah. We are going over the route north of Nain with Lucas and his wife Sarah. Yvonne, who set up the meeting, did the translating. Lucas was originally from the Quebec side of the northern Labrador peninsula (Ungava Bay), and has travelled the coast extensively, on both boats and snowmobiles.
