Battle Harbor

Battle Harbor is a narrow harbor between two islands, with narrower entrances. There is little protection from the wind, but rocks at the entrances prevent waves from entering the harbor.
Battle Harbor was a fishing port since about 1775. After cod fishing stopped in Canada in the 1990s, the settlement became a historic site, operated by the Battle Harbor Historic Trust.

After the remnants of post-tropical depression Earl passed to the north of us, we went to Mary's Harbor, and then to the fascinating historic site of Battle Harbor. More about Battle Harbor later.
We planned to spend only a day in Battle Harbor, but Earl seems to like Labrador, and turned around and came back over us again, so we are sitting at the dock, waiting for the wind coming thru the entrance to moderate before we leave.

We anchored in a small, unnamed cove in St Lewis Inlet, in the south of Labrador to sit out post-tropical Earl. We are waiting for the resultant headwinds to decrease more before continuing.
For those interested in the technical details of how we get weather forecasts at sea, I wrote this, http://www.issuma.com/rhudson/issumaboat/WeatherForecastsOnIssuma.htm

The spinnaker adds a bit of color to the gray sky and sea.

With strong headwinds forecast, we went into a fjord to anchor off the former Moravian Church Mission site of Ramah (which I believe means "high place"). We didn't see any sign of the old buildings, just polar bears (two adults with two cubs) and caribou.

In the north, storms tend to start coming in September. I wanted to be further south before the storms came (though not as far south as where the hurricanes come), so we left Baffin Island and sailed back across Hudson Strait into the Labrador Sea. We saw a few icebergs, one of which is in the picture, off to port.

We had a strong NW wind pushing us along when we were near Nain on the way south, so didn't stop there this time. The blog is a few days behind, we are now in Marys Harbor in the south of Labrador.

Two seals enjoy the weather on a growler.
We left Nannuk harbor after a few days and anchored in an unnamed harbor 8 miles NW of there. The seals were on a growler just outside of the unnamed harbor.

We figured that in such a sparsely-populated place as an anchorage on Baffin Island would be deserted. We were quite surprised when three boats motored into the anchorage. There were a total of about 10 people aboard, the Akavak family from Kimmirut and Iqaluit, who had been travelling for two weeks, hunting and fishing. They didn't need all three boats for the next part of their trip, so were leaving one of their boats for a few days in Nannuk Harbor.
