Day 6 & 7
22 May 2015
Been out of internet connection range for a while, so will be doing two days worth at once. Day 6 is real easy. We left Bimini at 6:30am and started our run towards Chub Cay. I didn't know if we could make the run in one day or not. I thought that the gulf stream crossing was bad until we did this crossing over the Bahama Banks. Looks like the ocean, but only around 15 feet deep. It was somewhat choppy, just enough to make it uncomfortable. And that's all you do all day is sit in the boat and ride and look at the water. It gets very boring. Only saw a few dolphin and flying fish.
At 5pm we still had about two hours to reach Chub Cay, which would have put us there after 7pm and I didn't want to be there close to dark looking for a place to anchor, so we decided to anchor on the Great Bahama Bank just before getting into the tongue of the ocean. That's where it goes from 15 feet to over a 1000 feet in less than an 1/8 of a mile. When we anchored it was as smooth as glass, but around 8pm our old friend the wind came for a visit. And it blew and the boat was rocking and rolling all night long. Needless to say, we didn't get much sleep that night. It started to calm down around 5 in the morning which was good.
We pulled the anchor at 6:30am and made a heading toward Nassau. The run there was as flat as a board. But it was still a 62 mile run. We got here at 3pm and started looking for a marina. We didn't call ahead since we had no phone service after No Name Harbor, and not sure when we would get there. We couldn't get anybody on the radio, so we anchored the boats in the harbor and took the dinghy to a few marinas until we finally found one that had slips available. Their price is $2.00 per foot per day plus $10.00 a day for electric. We plan on staying here thru Saturday night and then find an anchorage close by until the weather will allow us to travel on to the Exumas.
Phil, Maggie and their friend, Jeff, who they just happened to meet here, and Rose and myself went to a restaurant here at the marina for my birthday dinner. It all went well, and the food was very good but rather pricey. After that we came back to the boat for some brownies, that Rose had cooked, and some ice cream. So everyone had a good time and, it has been a good night. Don't know what all we are going to do tomorrow, but I'm sure we will be busy having fun. Salty was very happy to get off the boat for a while. More tomorrow-----
