Simon's Town, Cape Town
02 March 2016
Wildlife, or rather sea life, is everywhere. Even in the fog. Right whales (we think) but no orcas, sharks (fortunately smallish), Cape Seals (endlessly entertaining to watch), birds (all sorts), African penguins and dolphins in an enormous pod (must be over 100 swimming alongside us) as we sail.
Arrival at False Bay, south of Cape Town, at twilight with the hope of a timely stop at a possible anchorage beneath impressive cliffs gleaming in the setting sun. Swell however, is creating breaking waves across the entrance to the small bay so it’s a no-go anchorage unfortunately. 3m long kelp fronds litter the water surface creating mats of vegetation. Night entry into the bay isn't ideal but the local navigation warning lights are mostly working, the radar is great and the fog has thankfully lifted. Another 20 miles into the bay and Simons Town lights loom. The moorings field has some unidentified lights indicating something, but not sure what, so anchoring out is the only option. After a night’s sleep it all makes sense in the daylight. There is a malodorous smell invading Juffa. Cormorants have turned a sad, unloved yacht on a mooring into a deposit for vast quantities of pungent guano. Cape Seals provide endless amusement as they cavort, chill out, chase balls of fish or thrash octopus between the yachts.
Visting from the UK, Brian (dad/gramps) brings a much needed tiny jet for the largest gas burner on the stove hob. Life has been very sooty for some months and with an element of water restrictions on board it’s been a particularly frustrating task cleaning up, never mind the time waiting for the gas to raise temperatures enough to boil the kettle. So now it’s a soot free zone with endless cups of tea. We are British after all.
Taking time out from the ongoing jobs list is rather nice. Visiting Cape Point (and heading through the fynbos - local greenery that grows everywhere), the Cape of Good Hope (with it’s bus loads of tourists), Table Mountain (with no table cloth and amazing views for those who don't mind heights) and the Boulder Rock African Penguins down the road in Simons Town is a relatively action packed time … with plenty of eating. The diet hasn't started yet.
