The Voyage of 'S/V Röde Orm' - Sweden
Come on board and take part in our adventures while exploring the world at the slow pace of a sailing boat. We left in June 2009, heading south to escape the northern winter... to start with. Currently in Algarve/Portugal taking it one day at a time.

Fast but faulty was my motto today...

Used the power drill to enlarge the hole in the hull where the transducer cable for the depth sounder should be. Forgot to empty the storage under the SB cabin bunk firtst though. The result is seen in the picture.

We had a sallad with sardines in tomato sauce for lunch!! *LOL*

...where those massive bronze log sensors were. Next step is one or two sessions with epoxy putty-then sanding and then some more putty

Grey, cold and some rain showers today, so nothing much done on the boat otherwise.

The Spring Gale

It's blowing 41 knots sustained and gusting to 50. The boat is on the hard on a trailer right at the waterfront with the rigging on and lying beam to the wind.

No tides in the Baltic sea or here in 'resund. (between Copenhagen and Malmö, Sweden) the tides never exceeds 0,2 meters. The wind tide effect gets a kind of 'Turbo' effect here so right now its 1,5 meter lower than usual.

All is well on board and the wind is forecasted to decrease during the evening. tomorrow we'll probably be able to get on with the paint job.

Better weather in sight?

Not really, your's truly never stops hoping for it though...

Did some tinkering on the engine to prepare for Arnold's (the mechanic) next visit. Also installed a seacock and a seawater hose to the galley and the transducer for the log in the morning hours

End of the dry and warm weather

Rain showers and winds around 20-30 knots for the rest of this week is forecasted.

We made a 'test' paint on parts of the deck wth the 2-part polyurethane primer, but there won't be much more done to the painting for the next few days...

No worries, there are a'few' other bits and pieces to tinker with in the meantime.

Röde Orm is fitted with stainless steel through-hulls as you can see in this picture.

You can also see that a previos owner has been cutting out a section of the outer skin of the hull around the through hulls, and reglassed those sections to solid glass. Very good, and probaly a main reason for this 44 year old cored hull to stil be VERY dry and in a very good condition.

This is really good news for us, since it's been nagging on my mid for a while. I consider the issue with the cored hull as the only weak spot with these boats. Extremely strong as they are.
