calm at last!
05 July 2011 | Vuda Pt Marina

Alas, no more rocking and rolling- Yeah! We are safely tied up in slip 39 at Vuda( pronounced Vunda for you Haoulis) .pt marina. Its half the price of Port Denarau and one can see why. There are no floating finger peers and the light doesn't work in the bathroom, but the people are nice and its a lot cheaper. We are crammed in here like sardines(reminiscent of Lahaina harbor). So, anyway , we awoke from our new anchorage to find that the wind which had been from the SW all day and from the North most of the evening had shifted first to the west. Well, that would have been fine, we were well protected from the west, but it didn't stop there, and by morning was blowing 15- 20 k out of the south to which we were totally exposed. Well, after cursing the grib files, and the crappy SSB fiji weather station which you can't pick up, and neville , the weather router I had phoned from Land Harbor, I donned my mask and fins anticipating a nightmare of chain wrapped around coral. Much to my surprise. the chain had freed itself from the coral and was floating free. Cheers, so we upped anchor without having to dive on it like we did in Widigi. I thanked Jesus several times ( no comments from Guy), and off we went with 20-28k of wind and seas getting rougher by the minute. We cleared Koita I and were just able to fall off enough to get the sails up with a triple reefed main and Staysail. We motor sailed without any significant reef encounters tight hauled the entire way and just missed laying the harbor entrance. It was cloudy and rainy, but all in all a quite pleasant sail. The Harbor was crowded, but they managed to squeeze us in between a big Cat and a 48 ft motor sailor. Ric from Freestyle was there waiting to help with our lines. We cleaned up the boat and went to a 4th of july party with fire works, then back to the boat for more Ahi. The Capt of the liberty had just hauled out and was examining the damage. I offered him some Ahi. Apparently, my exhausting attempt to please the islanders was a huge Faux Pas, and they were all disappointed that the huge head and carcass I went to so much trouble to bring in to them, was not appreciated as it would have been most other villages we have been to. Oh well, what do you do??? We spent today, shopping for electrical adapters for the weird plugs they have here without any luck and provisioning. Tomorrow, we take the Jib in for repairs and do laundry. Doubt you'll hear much from us for a while, Love, Rob, Guy, and the Rose
