Azure in the Azores
We're loving it here - flowers, sunshine, a dock and friendly cruisers from around the world. What more could you want? Rodney is busy working on his family tree with RJ, going to the local library where they have the original family documentation books that the Portuguese priests wrote dating back to the 1700s. I think they found great, great, great, great Grandpa Antonio. The island has about 10,000 people so there is some action (well, dinner starts at 7:00 and I guess at 11:00 or so there could be a music scene, but I wouldn't really know.) There are these amazing mosaic cobblestone sidewalks all over town that have me mesmerized. We took a 3 hour taxi tour of the island of Failal. A volcano erupted in the late 50's - lava rock and craters make an interesting landscape on one side of the island. Mostly the hills are green and lush. The wildflowers are blooming - everything smells wonderful and fresh. We are at a dock three boats deep. Currently, we are the boat "at the dock" and the folks from the other boats step on Azure to get to the dock - so we're getting to know our neighbors. We had loads of fun painting our boat mural on the concrete docks (Leo said we needed Sally's mom to help us!) The painting is a rite of passage for those crossing the Atlantic - technically the boys and I haven't done our part yet, but we will do the last leg to Portugal so we get our names on it too! We'll be here in Horta, Faial for another day before making our way to Terceira, another island of the Azores about 50 miles away. Happy summer!
