Day 2 and nothing new
28 June 2010 | The boat
Rodney
We are 612 miles away from land. The winds are light and variable and supposed to stay this way for the next two days. We sailed with the spinnaker for a while and then with the jib, but in the end it was old ironsides that is pushing us along.
It is midnight right now and I just got up for my watch. The night is amazingly still and you can see for miles all around. There is a full moon peaking through the clouds that is lighting up the entire ocean. We can see the lights of one other sailboat about 5 miles on our starboard side. They must also be heading to Portugal. Each night we see several ships pass. I assume that we will see more and more as we get closer to Gibraltar.
It gets a little boring when you are sailing in very calm weather for hours and hours. Jane brought some electronic books that are really nice to pass the time. We are learning about the Civil War right now. I seem to always find a boat project to keep me busy, the kids usually read or fish. Gary likes to take long naps on the trampoline and Jane has started to knit. In the 15 years we have been together I have never seen Jane knit anything - but in just one day she has created a small towel. The boys like to chase each other around the boat with the yarn. In the end - both boys resorted to seeing who could tie the biggest yarn ball.
