Day Two - Simi
19 August 2011 | Simi
Rodney
We moved the boat to Pethi bay today to wait out the bad weather. There is a bus that runs between Pethi and Simi town so we boarded around 1:00. Simi town, on the island of Simi, has a rich maritime history. A little known industry here is the sponge market. Many years ago, divers used to free dive up to 180’ to grab the precious sponges and then ascend to the surface. The adventurous divers would hold on to a 40lb rock to help them descend quickly. As you can imagine there were many casualties. The industry has long gone with most sponges coming from Asia and Florida. You can still buy a Simi sponge if you look hard enough!
