Rabat has been a true highlight of our trip. Unfortunately we only spent two days in this very special kingdom. The weather is telling us to move on, so we are listening.
Immediately, you realize you are in a very different country. The veils, colors, and manners of the people are so different than turkey- the only other Muslim country we have visited. You really feel so special to take in a very different culture and way of life. In the short time that we have spent here we toured Rabat and Sale. We walked through some very old streets that were lined with the most interesting doors that we have seen on our trip. In Rabat we visited the Kasbah and took in the great views that were used to defend the city.
It was so nice to arrive in Morocco and be welcomed by some very nice cruisers. There are several cruisers that have spent several weeks here and really enjoyed the country. It was great to get their advice and hang out together. We were invited to a dock party as soon as we arrived, and it was great to meet some of the boats that are moving on to the Canaries. Most of these boats will be crossing the Atlantic together, so it is nice to meet our Atlantic cruising comrades.
Here are our top ten things that were unique about Rabat:
- The kings pier has 19 slips, but only 5 boats
- There is a line in the bathroom because of people washing their feet
- The big supermarket has a DJ instead of elevator music
- The lowest pressure pouf salesman in all of Morocco
- Tonic is plentiful, but you cannot buy gin
- The only capital city with a navigation hazard to protect pirates
- The best ocean views are reserved for the dead
- Protestors all wear official vests
- You can have a decent meal for 2.5 Euros
- The Moroccan's are some of the nicest people you will ever meet
