Day five
12 July 2014 | At Sea

The last 24 hours have only produced 48 miles of progress toward Hawaii. Light air sailing is the definitely the toughest type of sailing. each small breath of air can lead to gains if you are waiting and can anticipate the shifts. All of our fleet has suffered over the last 24 hour, but Azure still hold on to a small lead in division A. We are hoping our strategy and placement next to the high pressure will result in gains over the next week. We are still 1375 miles from Hawaii.
RJ spotted a fisherman's glass ball yesterday while were floating and waiting for wind. He made a mad plunge over the side and barely caught it before it was gone. The ball included some traveling muscles and a stowaway crab. Needless to say the crab was not happy being on the deck and scurried over the side to find his next ride. RJ is very proud off his prize.
The ocean can be very beautiful when there is no wind. The water is an amazing blue and the cloud formations are stunning. RJ has been very tempted to jump in the water and try to outswim the boat when the spinnaker up and we are only doing 2 knots. I have advised against the swimming competition remembering a similar event in the BVI's. The peak air temperature was 88 degrees and the water is 79 degrees. Every day gets hotter and hotter especially with no wind. We saw an albatross today that cicled the boat
The crew is on a four hour watch schedule on Azure. My time on the tiller is at 4:00am, 12:00pm, and 8:00pm. Everyone on our crew of four drives for two hours, is crew for two hours and then sleeps for four hours. We keep the same schedule so you can get use to your watches and anticipate when you can sleep. I only really sleep between 12:00am and 4:00am. We try to knap during the day, but it is really hot in boat.
tonight I am cooking chicken curry over rice - yum. Ted and I prepared all of dinners ahead of time and freeze them. We either reheat them, or serve them over rice. I make rice in our pressure cooker because it only takes 3 minutes and saves propane. All of our meals need to end up in one pot for simplicity.
