As I type this we are 65 miles away from the finish in Kaneohe. We should be in some time between 2 and 6am so this is our last blog post. Yesterday was my birthday so I was hoping my boat mates would bake me a cake.....oh well. Yesterday and this morning were the worst conditions we have seen. We have sustained gusts of wind up[ to 40 knots for over twenty minutes. The wind started building around dusk and unfortunately there was no moon. So we had a wild ride flying the spinnaker all night and into the morning. Then about 4am the rain started really coming down. Buckets and buckets were dumped on the boat. Tony and I just wore our swimming suits rather than foul weather gear since the water and air were warm. Everything was wet by the end of our shift. And we had worked so hard to get the boat dry.
The good news is that were were still 4 miles ahead of Green Buffalo and California Girl in the morning. We were able to make 190 miles over 24 hours. We are cooking our last dinner tonight - and I mean last dinner. We only provisioned for 14 days knowing that you usually finish in 12! We have almost completely consumed all of our food and water.
The high winds have taken its toll on Azure and the other boats in our fleet. We have blown out two spinnakers and various other items. Three boats in the race have lost rudders and steering. I think we are going to sail conservatively tonight and lick our wounds.
