Acapulco – the Cliff Divers

No visit to Acapulco would be complete without the biggest tourist destination of seeing the Cliff Divers. Ever since 1934 the Cliff Divers have been dazzling crowds with 5 daily performances. We joined up with cruising friends, Peter and Margie from Peregrina and Bruce and Gina from Dreamcatcher, to enjoy a nice dinner at the restaurant overlooking the cliffs and enjoying the sunset while waiting for the performance to begin. The evening performances are the best in our opinion since the cliffs are well lit and watching the divers plunge into the blackness of the narrow cove below adds to the amazement. Each of the divers enters the water from the opposite side across the narrow cove to the huge cliff from which they will dive. But first they have to climb up the cliff face which they do with great speed and agility. We thought that the climb alone would be exhausting. The highest dives are from 115 feet into water which is 12 feet deep on average since the surge and tide are always changing. Obviously timing is essential. Some divers do beautiful swan dives headfirst. Some do one or two somersaults in the way down entering feet first. All are done in beautiful form. Taking photos of these dives is hard. Check out Google for photos but enjoy the sunset shot I have attached.
