Arrival at Charleston Harbor
18 November 2016 | Cooper River Marina - Charleston
It's not often that you get a near perfect sail, but Beaufort to Charleston was pretty close. We sailed more than 180 miles with sail only, seas modest and wind on a reach out of the west and northwest for two days and two nights. We cruised at 5-6 knots almost the entire way arriving at the crack of dawn one mile from the Charleston harbor entrance to enter with the incoming tide. The sun was out both days making it very pleasant, a little cool at night, but bundled in foul weather gear we were both toasty warm to handle 3 hour alternating shifts. The new energy systems worked especially well as solar kept the batteries charged in the day, and the wind generator ran all night. All navigation electronics on, and no energy problem or need for engine or generator. You gotta love it !
We arrived Cooper River Marina about 9 AM, were in our slip and knapping by 10... what a way to spend a few days. We joked as we came into Charleston Harbor that we just made a 200 mile ocean voyage and our fuel tank read "Full", both literally and figuratively!
