Thanksgiving in St. Mary's, GA
25 November 2016 | Thanksgiving Dinner
Thanksgiving in St. Mary's has been amazing. With more than 50 boats, everyone was up this morning making side dishes for the feast, at 8 AM, as a way to start the morning, three residents pulled up along side, offering thanksgiving welcome and handing us bloody Mary's. They went to every boat in the harbor to prepare everyone for the festivities. What a way to start the day.
We went in with our contribution of pies and squash casserole to a packed dinghy dock. When we arrived at the hotel where the dinner was to be held it was an unbelievable scene. Multiple tables set with more food than we could ever imagine, every variety and style. There were cruisers from all over the east coast and Canada, along with residents from St. Mary's. We had dinner with a hundred fellow sailors, everyone had a wonderful time, great food, huge table of desserts, and lots of conversation, including a history lesson from a resident who does tours of St. Mary's.
After dinner, we went for a walk along the waterfront, really needed it after the culinary feast... then back to the boat for a nap, which we also needed! Diana started decorating this evening for Christmas, putting out her big red bow on the bow of the boat and lighting it to start the season. Her twinkle lights on the inside of the saloon provide a festive mood. I guess it really is understandable, we are away from "home", alone on a boat, so we really want to make the holidays special, and spread a little cheer !
