IT's A NEW DAY...!
21 December 2016
Next morning we are up early, unable to sleep through most of the night. Start making calls to find someone to inspect the damages to the mast and make repairs. A call to Catalina, the manufacturer of the boat, and the name, with good references, of someone in Miami. Calls locally and a google search produces another riggers name and the Lauderdale Marine Center, billed as the largest repair yard in the country, with everyone you need for anything on a boat, and while the yard appeared to have good reviews, the rigger considerably less.
Our call to Miami, to Nordic Marine, referenced with high recommendations from Catalina, produced Yurki Auvinen, a Norwegian, very knowledgeable, accommodating and able to do the work, Questions: Can we get the boat to Miami ? No, mast isn't stable enough since we have to go outside. Can you send pictures ? Yes, sent immediately. Have a meeting but will come to Lauderdale to check it and discuss options... Great, when ?, Be there in a couple hours after meeting. Wow, talk about service. Yurki was at the yacht club three hours later, checked the conditions, went up the mast to check the top, and discussed options, including starting right away, while there, to get mast stable, ready to move to Miami, to his yard and if parts all available could have everything done in about 2 weeks. Suggested damage wasn't as bad as it could be, mast itself looked good, furler foils removed and can be recovered and reused. Big issue was wiring, some of the wiring at top of the mast was gone and some dropped into the mast. They can try to fish lines through, but after checking lines down into bilge felt better and more efficient to pull the mast, rewire it then put it back up. After calls to suppliers and the yard, we decided to move the boat to Miami the next day, Thursday, and they would prep and pull the mast on Friday. Yurki and his assistant Greg worked until 6PM, in the dark, to get everything prepped and ready to move. Thursday, the next day appeared to be our only weather window for the next week given the secured with halyards but not permanent mast condition.
