Cuba's Most Distinguished Hero
11 March 2017 | Plaza Jose Marti at City Center
Jose Marti, plazas, parks, memorials, statues, a sports complex, squares, buildings, almost anything you can put a name on has Marti's name, and not just in Havana, almost every City in Cuba has a square or memorial commemorating Marti. He was an extraordinary man, writer, poet, political activist, rebel, and philosopher who lived much of his life outside Cuba, but never forgot his roots and the struggle for Cuban independence. He is embedded in the mind of the Cuban people as the hero of Cuban independence from Spain. You will see quotes from Marti everywhere, and his books flood the Cuban bookstores. By the way, Cubans, who do not have a dependence on the internet, are voracious readers with a 98% literacy rate! Bookstores are everywhere and every Cuban has a favorite quote from Marti.
