Marine Nature Reserve
24 September 2012 | Lough Hyne

We anchored for the day outside of Lough Hyne. It is the first marine nature reserve in Irelalnd. it is a very interesting lake. There is a very narrow and shallow entrance from the ocean. Because of this the incoming tide is four hours and the outgoing tide is 8.5 hours - very unusual. And the lake is very deep with low salinity and has a wide variety of marine life. Because of the shallow and narrow entrance there are no sharks, they think. While we were there a steady stream of people came to swim, thinking they are safe. Some wore diving suits but many only regular bathing suits. I might have tried it if I had my suit.
We went for a hike up to the 'Hill Top' and had a splendid view of the lake and the country-side. And then we had to time our exit because there is a rapids and later there is quite a drop with a great place for kayakers, not such a great place for our little dingy.
