Great hiking day
21 August 2013 | North-side of Eday

The Orkney islands are mostly gentle, rolling hills, littered with sheep. Eday fits that bill but on the northern end there is a high cliff. We spent several hours hiking up the hill and then around through the country-side. We meet an interesting man, our age, who packed in his life in Cornwall and moved up here with his wife. They raise sheep and beef cattle. She makes money doing payroll for some small businesses, which she can do on-line. He makes money working an hour or two at the local airport and then also at the pier. They are happy with their life, it is so much slower, but they like the physical labor. The view from their home is stunning. We also came across a chambered cairn. I crawled in this little tiny tunnel, through the cobwebs. I was able to stand up in the cairn and they had added a daylight window at the top so I could see around. There were several chambers coming off the center. It was amazing to be able to enter, but the guys weren't up for crawling in.
