Tyne and Wear

24 September 2013 | Newcastle on the Tyne
Vicki
We, once again, risked our lives, and rented a car. This allowed us to visit the Beamish Open air museum, taking us back to a coal mining town in the early 20th century. Then we went way back in history, to the time of the Roman Empire in England and visited Hadrian’s Wall. This wall was the northwest boundary of the Roman Empire and was started by Emperor Hadrian in 120. It originally went over 70 miles, all the way across England. The drive along the wall was wonderful and we visited two of the forts along the wall. This picture is of a special floor, the columns are the support and the couple of tiles pictured form the floor. The space under the floor is used to circulate hat air – under-floor heating! Those Romans were so smart. Of course, this was the commanders private home, the troops did not have it nearly so good, 8 guys in a teeny, tiny room with no heat.
We also took a bus to visit Newcastle on the Tyne. It is a college town and this is freshie week so there were a lot of young adults celebrating their next step in life. Or you could just say, drinking.
