Oil refineries

We are on the east coast of England and the wind is coming mainly from the south east – just the direction we want to go. Plus, this means there are not very many good anchorages without the swell, so we have been in marinas a lot. The further south we go, the more expensive they are, about two British pounds for every 50 nm. We have found two anchorages, the first one inside the breakwaters of the Tyne River. When the tide is ebbing out, it breaks down the swell coming in but as the tide floods in, it brings the swell with it. After three very uncomfortable nights we left. We sailed a distance of 25 nm, but because of the wind and having to tack, we actually sailed 45 nm. Surprisingly, it was a comfortable sail, without bashing into waves. We are now anchored at the mouth of the Tees River. This is where many oil pipelines come in from the oil platforms. In retrospect, we should have guessed that there would have been oil refineries here, but we were not smart enough to figure that one out. While we are in a calmer anchorage, it certainly isn’t the most beautiful one we have seen!
