Walkin in the machair
21 June 2014 | Loch Skipport, South Uist
Vicki
We revisited a favorite spot from last year, Loch Skipport on South Uist, to share the site with Tom and Rose. We were able to spend the whole day going for a great hike. We were not sure where we were going and we got there really fast! Ha, maybe a compass and map and a plan next time. It was hilly, but without any trees, it is really difficult to get lost. Even with all the rocks and hills there was a lot of bog land, which they call machair here. The picture is for my brother Ed, who is a horticulturist. I do believe this is an insect eating plant. We were hoping that it's favorite meal was a midgie.
Addendum: I saw a different poster that described machair as being the sand dune areas in-between the shore-line and the bog land. Under that description, we were hiking no in the machair, but in the bogs.
