Yesterday, Paul was ill so I went to see the movie "A Magnificent Haunting". It is an Italian movie released in 2012 about an apartment haunted by a group that were in hiding during WWII. When I got back to the boat Paul was watching "Charlotte Gray"' a Cate Blanchett movie released in 2001. It is about a young English woman who is a spy that goes to France during the war. I sat down to eat my supper of chili, and to finish the book I was reading, "22 Brittannia Road". This is a 2011 book about Polish refugees from WWII who settle in Ipswich. I realized how haunted Europe still is from the war.
Paul's father, Erv, served in the war in northern Africa and Italy. My father, Herman, served in France and Germany. Like many men who were soldiers in that war, they did not, could not, talk about their experiences. But we, as their children, carry some of their emotional scars. My travels in Europe have given me a greater understanding of what they experienced and saw. Even though my father passed away over 25 years ago, and Paul's father over 10 years ago, I feel that we understand them even better now.
