Crossing to Spain
22 August 2014 | Bay of Biscay
Vicki
Nick Rowse, a friend from the First Unitarian Society, joined us in Vannes (the a sounds like an ahh and the s is silent), France. He had two nights on the boat, one in the marina and one at anchor. And then we all took off to cross the Bay of Biscay. This will be a minimum of three days. We have completed one full day and so far, knock on wood, it has been a gentle passage. The wind has been in the 5 - 10 knot range. So we are not making great speed, but we are going in the right direction. Plus, it has been gentle enough that I was able to make blueberry-oatmeal cookies. The French flag is down from our spreaders and our Spanish flag is ready to hoist.
The picture is one I took off the end of the boat, if you look closely you can see the jelly fish.
It is close to a new moon and it did not rise until 4:00 in the morning. They sky was clear and we had a wonderful view of the skies, with the Milky Way streamed across the sky. We all saw and heard dolphins during the night. They leave a phosphorescent trail when they leap out of the water. We seemed to have gone through a bloom of jellyfish. They would be disturbed by our boat so we had a stream of glowing blobs behind our boat. I have not seen that before. The picture is one I took off the end of the boat, if you look closely you can see the jelly fish.
