Sailing around the Caribbean

In 2007 our family sailed from the Chesapeake Bay to the Caribbean, visiting most of the islands and stopping in Cartagena, Colombia for hurricane season. We just returned to the Chesapeake after visiting many Central American countries and islands.

Virgin Gorda

18 November 2007 | The Baths
Maria
On Friday afternoon we left Village Cay Marina in Road Town, Tortola, to go to Virgin Gorda where the last rally celebration took place. We were greeted by the Virgin Gorda Yacht Marina's manager, a very sharp women-captain, who gave us gifts and information about the island. We dined at a very fine restaurant that evening with Crazy Horse's couple (Bill and Rosemary) and with our crew. Crazy Horse was the second largest boat on our fleet (60 foot long) and a beautiful boat.

The next day we took our first trip out to see the island and went to the Baths, a beautiful rocky area in the south-west end of the island, where the waves come in making pools through a myriad of large rocks. It was an amazing place. Snorkeling was like being inside one of those large aquariums you see at a restaurant in the US, with the exception of the coral reef colors - they had little color and were mostly brown. Only the fish were colorful. We were told that this is part of the global warming phenomena and the damage that the coral reefs have endured in the past 20 years. Along the trail to go down the baths we saw birds and many reptiles. Virgin Gora is home to the smallest lizard in the world so we were all trying to find it but with no luck.
