Sailing around the Caribbean

In 2007 our family sailed from the Chesapeake Bay to the Caribbean, visiting most of the islands and stopping in Cartagena, Colombia for hurricane season. We just returned to the Chesapeake after visiting many Central American countries and islands.

Guadeloupe - Iles de Saintes

29 January 2008 | Breathtaking Sunset at Iles de Saintes
Les Saintes, as these breathtaking islands are called, are part of Guadeloupe and lie south of its most southern part. They surrounded by coral reefs, have great snorkeling & diving areas, and have only 1 small but quaint town. We met our friends at the anchorage off Ilet Cabrit, so called because it had a goat-ranch at one point and it still had goats roaming the island. We spent 2 nights here and, even though the wind was pushing the boats at anchor in all sorts of directions often making us think our anchor was dragging, we manage to sleep well here. We snorkeled, went for a walk on Ilet Cabrit where we saw many well-fed ship that appear to belong to no one, and had our last dinner with Optimus before waving good bye. It was sad to see them leave and we had spent so much time together. Kim and I had already commented that in all the years we lived in DC we did not meet as many people, most of whom are very genuine and willing to help, as we have in the 3 months we have been in the Caribbean. It is almost like being back to college where you make acquaintances and friends with people quickly because we are all in the same situation - trying to navigate, safely while having fund and accomplishing our boat and life duties and all away from our respective countries. Making these friendships is a large part of the attraction and fun of our trip.
