Sailing around the Caribbean

In 2007 our family sailed from the Chesapeake Bay to the Caribbean, visiting most of the islands and stopping in Cartagena, Colombia for hurricane season. We just returned to the Chesapeake after visiting many Central American countries and islands.

Martinique: Miran

27 February 2008 | Rounding Off Diamond Rock
Sailing to Marin on Wednesday was a bit slow as the winds were low except when we rounded off Diamond Rock. At this point the winds accelerated to 20+ knots and changed direction to a close haul. We were later told that this was always the case. Sailors we met who had sailed from Spain said their entire trip was fine except when they rounded off this rock - winds were as high as 50 knots and they lost one of their sails. Therefore, we were fortunate to round off this rock when the winds outside of it were light.

We got a slip in the Marin marina and spent the next 3 nights there trying to get our battery issue resolved. The marina's top electrician came over to see our boat on Thursday and said it was the alternator's regulator and he would try to track down one. In the meantime we could not charge our batteries because the marina did not have 115V slips nor did they have a converter available.
Finally, on Friday the electrician let us borrow an AC charger and we charged the batteries the entire day as their change level was close to the lowest they could be and not be damaged. He was unable to find a regulator and so we decided to sail down to St. Lucia.
