10/02/2012, Fort Flagler
We left Roche early enough to fish down the coast of San Juan Island. We caught a small coho. Had a couple of other hits, but nothing landed, except a puny little 6 inch salmon. Sent a picture to the boys as a joke.
A fairly strong wind was predicted, but didn't amount to much. We ended up motor-sailing across the Strait of Juan de Fuca. As a matter of fact, it was calm enough that Deva baked cookies while underway. Got to Fort Flagler in time for another beautiful sunset.

10/01/2012, Roche Harbor
It was nice to wake up in familiar territory. We decided to hike to Turn Point lighthouse, an activity we enjoy whenever we are at Stuart. This time the dogs went with us. They did fine, but were pooped out by the time we got back 3 hours later.
The hike wouldn't be complete without stopping at the schoolhouse to buy shirts. School was in session, so the grounds were off limits.
When we arrived at the lighthouse, there was major renovation going on. Hopefully by next year the lighthouse and house will be open to the public.
That afternoon we went over to Roche Harbor for the store and to get ready to cross the Strait. We were again surprised at how empty everyplace has been. They have even moved the customs station up by the gas dock for the winter.

09/30/2012, Stuart Island
We left Silva Bay early enough to fish through Porlier Pass. Caught a nice ling cod, but undersize so had to let it go. Hooked 3 salmon, but they all jumped off before we got them landed.
Another boater told us about a beautiful island near Bedwell called Portland Island, so decided to try it. When we got to the cove, it looked like a stern tie would be necessary, and the guidebooks all reported ferry swells, so we did some rethinking and went on to Prevost Harbor on Stuart Island.
Amazing! There was room on the dock, and we were one of only 2 boats on buoys. The San Juans really clear out after Labor Day.

09/29/2012, Silva Bay
The trip across Strait of Georgia was a little lumpy, swells coming down the channel, but we had a nice breeze and hazy sunshine. Arrived in Silva Bay in the early afternoon, anchored, and took the dogs ashore. Then decided to treat ourselves by going out to dinner. The Silva Bay Burger was to die for!

09/28/2012, Sunset Cove, Jedediah Island
We woke just in time to get the dogs to shore and back before the rain came. We stayed warm and dry inside, Gary doing wiring projects, and Deva baking cookies. We even set up a jigsaw puzzle. Late in the afternoon the sun broke through, so we hiked to the old homestead. We took a wrong turn at one point, so our hour walk turned into 2 hours. Got back just in time for sunset in Sunset Cove.

09/27/2012, Sunset Cove, Jedediah Island
Left Mouat 8 crab richer. This calls for crab cakes tonight! Headed to Sunset Cove on Jedediah Island, another of our favorite anchorages. The island was a homestead for a man who tried unsuccessfully to raise sheep. The island is now a provencial park, with sheep roaming everywhere. We took a walk and encountered a bunch grazing in the meadow. When they saw us, they just moved to higher ground, undoubtedly used to intruders.
