Northwest Cruising
Whale
Gary / overcast and windy
06/15/2012, Imperial Eagle Channel, Barkley Sound, Vancouver Island, B.C.

Today was spent trolling for salmon and trying (unsuccessfully) to trap some prawns. We did, however, catch a rockfish with our flasher and hootchie. When I let it go, it was quickly snatched up by an eagle that had flown over from a nearby island, after seeing the rockfish come to the surface as I was reeling it in. I will put a photo in the gallery.
We also saw a grey whale. It was off our port bow, then dove and came up on our starboard quarter. They are magnificant animals and I hope we see more.

Ahmah Cove
Gary/Moderating winds
06/14/2012, Tzartus Island, Barkley Sound, Vancouver Island, B.C.

We found a cozy little cove with a nice bumpy (and hard) rock in the entrance and decided to wait for a higher tide before going back through. Lost a little bottom paint.....oh well, add one more boat project to the list.

Okay, your note is five days old so we don't know "where y've bin 'er what y've done" but we hope all is well. We spent the weekend at Queen City YC doing our JO thing. Diane got sick and we had to stay an extra day. Arrived in Deer Harbor about noon today. Headed north through the Gulf Islands tomorrow. Sail safe!
Turtle Bay
Gary/windy
06/13/2012, Turtle Island, Barkley Sound, Vancouver Island, B.C.

The past few days have been very windy, with gale warnings (up to 35 knots) off the coast. Effingham was very protected, except from the direction the wind was coming, so we moved to Turtle Bay, which has good protection from the west. Another boat came into the anchorage.....the first time we have had company, since we are here so early in the season.

Along the way, we had a successful day fishing.....two chinooks. We have never caught two the same day, much less the same week, or the same year. No halibut yet, but we are working on it.

Bamfield behind us
Gary
06/08/2012, Tzartus Cove, Barkley Sound

After two days and nights in the rain and wind at the public dock in Bamfield, we are back in Tzartus Cove as a first stop on the way to our next stop. Bamfield is a nice town, very secluded (no road access on the west side) and a good place to pick up some groceries, fishing tackle and fill the water tanks. Our friends from OYC, Mike and Teri Murphy, have a cabin (more like a house) and they let us use the washer and dryer get caught up on laundry after Deva's dunking in Thrasher Cove. They came to the boat for a crab Alfredo dinner, then left for Olympia the next day.

Today we plan to go to Effingham Island, a good all weather anchorage. There are gale warnings in effect until tomorrow morning.

Sorry we were not at the shower, but glad to hear Alex and Christie made it (ha ha). A boy? I didn't know this family knew how to do boys. Congratulations to them.....this oughta be fun.
Tzartus Cove
Gary
06/04/2012, Barkley Sound, Vancouver Island, British Columbia

We spent last night at Tzartus Cove and will spend tonight as well. This was our favorite spot last time we were in Barkley Sound and we caught a nice lingcod then, too.

Today we trolled for salmon, with no luck, but we caught 3 rockfish....one was almost 4 lbs. Rockfish for dinner!

Yesterday, we fired the watermaker up and it worked pretty well. However, this morning I discovered that it has a bad oil leak, so I'm not sure we will be able to use it much longer. Another project for the list when we come back.

Tomorrow we go to Bamfield for the night....to get water and some fishing tackle.

Dodger Channel
06/02/2012, Barkley Sound, Vancouver Island, British Columbia

Dodger Channel is one of our favorite spots in Barkley Sound, and it has a nice dog beach. We spent two days here and caught our first fish (a small greenling). It will make good crab bait. We harvested some mussels and Deva scrubbed the shells and cooked them for dinner. She gives them a 1 out of 10, "right up there with cilantro".
