06/19/2012, Pipestem Inlet, Barkley Sound, Vancouver Island, B.C.
We are anchored in 60 feet of water behind Bazett Island in preparation for taking the dinghy up Lucky Creek tomorrow. There is suppopsed to be a very picturesque water fall at the head of the creek, but the mouth shoals at low tide, so, we will time our trip around high tide.
As we arrived in the area (on Sidetrack), Deva spotted a bear at the mouth of the creek and we approached with the camera. We took photos from about 200 ft away. I'll put more in the gallery.

We were in Bamfield yesterday to buy a few things (diesel $6.14/gal). Today, we scouted quite a few potential anchorages along Trevor Channel that did not measure up and ended up at Turtle Bay, one of our favorites (good dog beach).
After many days of clouds, wind and rain, we have our first sunny days coming up. It will be a nice change.

Lots of rain today.....about 4". Deva entertained herself by collecting rainwater for the tank. She draped the cockpit enclosure panels to drain into a pan on the sidedeck. The photo does not show it very clearly, but she had collected 9 gallons by the end of the day.
I entertained myself by installing a bilge pump warning light at the cockpit instrument panel. It worked as planned and lit up bright red the next morning as we plowed thru the waves, while the bilge pump emptied all the rainwater that had come down thru the mast.

06/15/2012, Imperial Eagle Channel, Barkley Sound, Vancouver Island, B.C.
Today was spent trolling for salmon and trying (unsuccessfully) to trap some prawns. We did, however, catch a rockfish with our flasher and hootchie. When I let it go, it was quickly snatched up by an eagle that had flown over from a nearby island, after seeing the rockfish come to the surface as I was reeling it in. I will put a photo in the gallery.
We also saw a grey whale. It was off our port bow, then dove and came up on our starboard quarter. They are magnificant animals and I hope we see more.

We found a cozy little cove with a nice bumpy (and hard) rock in the entrance and decided to wait for a higher tide before going back through. Lost a little bottom paint.....oh well, add one more boat project to the list.

The past few days have been very windy, with gale warnings (up to 35 knots) off the coast. Effingham was very protected, except from the direction the wind was coming, so we moved to Turtle Bay, which has good protection from the west. Another boat came into the anchorage.....the first time we have had company, since we are here so early in the season.
Along the way, we had a successful day fishing.....two chinooks. We have never caught two the same day, much less the same week, or the same year. No halibut yet, but we are working on it.
