Like homing pigeons and rental horses....

......when you point us home we start to run faster. The photo is sunset at Dodger Channel, our last night in Barkley Sound. We had easy passages coming south, with some nice weather and good crabbing at Port San Juan.
. We spent a productive (and expensive) day in Deer Harbor working on the watermaker. It is not completely fixed yet, but well on the way.
. The plan is to arrive in Olympia tomorrow PM.

herring
Gary / Sunny
06/24/2012, Wouwer Island

We put down the heavy duty herring rig (chain and anchor) and came up with one real nice herring. After years of trying, I have finally now caught a herring using this method.
The herring balls at Wouwer Island were amazing....like dark under-water clouds, swirling around the boat with seals and salmon in hungry pursuit. This unfortunate individual tried to escape by darting thru a chain link, and got stuck.
On our way to the next anchorage, we caught our 4th salmon and a few more shrimp. I am going to miss this place.
Tuesday we head south. We should be back in the US Thursday or Friday, at Deer Harbor on Orcas Island, for some watermaker repairs.

Good to see that someone, somewhere, is getting some shrimp. Our results so far have matched your earlier ones: three sets, a total of FOUR shrimp!

We are temporarily back home to attend our nephew's wedding this afternoon. Back up to Taku Lodge and Dreamtime tomorrow morning.

You might want to check the lat/long you entered. I don't think you've made it to China in the last few days!
Shrimp

06/23/2012, Wouwer Island, Barkley Sound, Vancouver Island, B.C.

After flunking shrimping so far this trip, we finally got an A+ today. We pulled up 75 nice ones this morning. Previous sets had given us zero, 1 and 4. A fish carcass seems to be the magic bait. We reset the trap to pick up in the morning.
I went fishing for small fish today (halibut bait) in the dinghy and Sassy tried to swim out to me from shore. She is a fishing fanatic.
Tonight we are anchored in a small cove on Wouwer Island. This is one of the outer islands, exposed to the open ocean. We are on the back side and it is fairly calm, but we would not try this place in stormy weather. It is very shallow but has a nice beach.

Looks like a great seafood harvest for a Happy anniversary dinner today. Looks like fun
Whales, eagles, salmon, rockfish
Gary / Overcast
06/22/2012, Effingham Bay, Barkley Sound, Vancouver Island, B.C.

What a day. We started off to our next destination trolling for salmon and caught two rockfish instead (yay! rockfish for dinner). Soon we came upon two grey whales feeding on herring. They were doing the bubble curtain thing where they force the fish into a ball and then come up from below with their mouth open. We got some photos, but mostly from a distance.
We dropped a prawn trap, to be picked up tomorrow, and decided to troll around Effingham Island. There were 4 or 5 other boats trolling Meares Bluff, and darned if we didn't come up with a 13 lb chinook. We used a Coyote spoon rather than a hootchie this time. Just before the fish hit, Deva spotted a huge eagles nest and an eagle carrying a rockfish (discarded by another fisherman) back up to it. Photos will be in the gallery soon.
At the end of the day, we filleted the salmon and put it in the freezer. The possession limit is 4 fish, we have three and one more may fill the freezer (hope it is a halibut).
Tomorrow, shrimp for dinner (we hope).

Lucky Creek Falls
Gary / Sunny
06/20/2012, Pipestem Inlet, Barkley Sound, Vancouver Island, B.C.

We expected the falls to be somewhat crowded on such a nice day, but it is early in the season. We are told the local fishing lodges take their customers there quite often.
Above the falls are some pools that are supposed to be very refreshing in hot weather. We climbed up a steep trail to have a look and it was beautiful, but not warm enough to jump in. The creek is fed by glaciers, so the water is cold. More photos in the gallery.

Hey, guys. Glad to see the new posts and catch up on your cruise. We've arrived in Nanaimo and are going take a layday tomorrow. Had to call a guy to fix our steering system. Turned out to be something I could have done myself if I'd just understood the problem. Live and learn. The guy in the office said Whiskey Golf has been active every day since the 8th but they were supposed to wind up as of today. Hopefully the range will be inactive over the weekend.
Oyster heaven
Gary / Sunny
06/20/2012, Bazett Island, Pipestem Inlet, Vancouver Island, B.C.

There is a lot of aquaculture in Pipestem Inlet......oyster farms. Consequently the shorelines are covered with them, and the dogs don't like walking on them. Oysters are not our "thing", but we had fried oysters a few days ago in Turtle Bay and they were pretty good.
