10/16/12 Packing up for the move from San Diego to Rockport, TX
So, the riggers were supposed to come on Monday but called to say that Tuesday would work better. We said fine because we really preferred Tuesday since the Truck would be coming Thursday and we didn’t want to have Mariah all piled with rigging for 3 days. When they showed up on Tuesday, they were so tired from sailing a race from San Diego to Ensenada over the weekend that they could only work for 4 hours. That left only Wednesday to do the rest of the rigging. They said it would be no problem to get it all done. They showed up at noon on Wednesday and worked until 5pm. I insisted that the truck would be ready at 8am the next day. They assured me that it would be no problem.
The truck arrived on time, the riggers not until 9:30. I took Daniel, the truck driver to get some breakfast while we waited for things to happen. The riggers arrived and got to work pulling the masts, wrapping everything, etc. The truck driver wanted to leave by noon at the latest. I was sweating it. What? Me worry? Needless to say, it all got done but not until 3pm. We waved bye bye to Mariah and set off for Mike & Sue’s house. They so nicely offered to put us up for as much time as we needed. They are awesome! However, they do have a cat and 2 dogs that I assumed that I was allergic to. I’m afraid that we weren’t very congenial guests as we thought that the animals were affecting me. But as soon as I got on the airplane to fly to San Antonio, I discovered that it wasn’t allergies afterall. The stress of moving Mariah had resulted in a full-blown cold. So sorry, Sue & Mike. I hope I didn’t give it to you.
We met up with John’s sister, Genie in San Antonio. We had planned to sightsee, but I felt so terrible that Genie drove us straight down to Corpus Christie where we rented a car and went to find Mariah who had arrived a couple of hours earlier. We met up with Daniel and saw that Mariah was all in once piece. Whew! I guess I’ve gotten really attached to her because I cried when I saw her perched on top of that huge truck.
Off we went to the Days Inn Motel. We have the cutest room. It’s obviously quite old, but it is painted lime green, with plaster walls and curved archways between the bedroom and the bathroom and kitchen. Very cozy. We’ll be there for 3 days and then back to living aboard Mariah. Of course, we have arrived just in time for an unusual heat wave. The locals have assured us that the 80-90 degrees we are suffering through right now shouldn’t last long. Right….we may be getting air conditioning way sooner than we thought.
In the meantime, we are now waiting for the riggers in Rockport to start the re-rigging process. Soon…soon…all will be as it should be.
