The Castle of the Knights

We visited the Castle of the Knights or the Le Krak des Chevaliers. It is one of the best examples of Crusader castles anywhere and one of the most well known monuments in Syria. The castle lies on a hill to have the obvious advantage of the high ground. It is a castle within a castle; it has a moat outside and moat inside.
The Crusaders acquired Le Krak des Chevaliers after conquering Antioch in 1098. They took over the castle, doubled its fortification and added other structures for 2,000 to survive a siege of up to 5 years. These reserves included stores of grain, olive oil, and a water aqueduct system.
Although a solid and significant fortification, the Crusades eventually came to an end and with it the castle once again belonged to the Muslims. We had a glorious time searching within the castle finding cool ways throughout this huge castle. It wouldn't have been a bad time to be a crusader back then.
