19 months & counting

Trenten Reef Paul turned 19 months yesterday and I can hardly believe how quickly the time has past since his birth in Papeete, Tahiti. We have been on quite an adventure, as always.

Moorea

We have, (sadly), just dropped Christina and Nicola off at the airport in Tahiti after a week out anchored off the island of Moorea. What a wonderful week full of fun. The ladies hit the spa!, hiking and swimming with Sting Rays and Sharks. The water in Moorea is really clear blue hues. We had a [...]

Papeete, Tahiti

We are anchored off marina Taina in Papeete, the main city on the island of Tahiti. This is the only 'big city' (250,000) we have seen in several months. It is a mix of European French & casual islander. The large verdant island soars into the sky and is mostly surrounded by a coral barrier reef. [...]

Paracas, The Nazca Lines & Cemetery of Chauchilla

12 September 2012
About 5 hours south of Lima lies the coastal town of Paracas know for its seaside desert National Park. Interesting colors, the dessert meeting the ocean. We took a tour to the poor man Galapagos Islands, Ballestas islands.

We also flew to the Nazca lines from the nearby airport. Exciting flight! Very turbulent but worth the effort to see these famous wonders.

The Nazca people were quite evolved in art, architecture and agriculture. After viewing the lines, their art and the ceremonial ruins of CAHUACHi i feel strong that the lines were not of unearthly origin. Actually, now that i have seen it first hand it makes me laugh at how ridiculous a concept it actually is. What they were used for most likely will never be known but alien landings i can guarantee they were not. They had extreme proficiency in geometry and I believe those who excelled in areas of art and science were most likely celebrated. Their funery preparations were also to an exact science shown in the preservation of their mummies. Comparing the skill of their painted pottery with the challenge of the Nazca lines and their complex architecture it is of no doubt these were advanced societies of the time.

Cemetery of Chauchilla - (15 mins from Nazca) Grave robbers left behind the corpses, which can be seen today all over the ground. In addition to skulls and bones, you can see several tombs centuries old, as well as long human hairs, ceramic fragments and others remains scattered on the dessert surface. It is the only archaeological site in Peru, in which ancient mummies are seen in their original graves, along with ancient artifacts, dating back to 1000 AD.
