slow speed race to ao chanlong

11/27/2010, ao chalong

we finally left the phi phi islands and headed to ao chalong to check into tailand. it was a great day and only about 20nm so we elected to sail. we started off doing about 5kts by the time we took this we where down to 2.5 and the slappers had given up. we got into ao chalong a couple hours later and got together with kirk and Michael. they took us to the cheepest bar in town which is a table outside the 711 that sells beers. they afternoon went down hill from there!

slapdash fun day

the slappers enticed us into staying another day saying they had a "surprise" day planned for us. it started with a hike up to the top of the island for a great view of our anchorage (you can see palapa down off the point. this was followed by breakfast before reporting to slapdash at 10 am for the "surprise" trip. the surprise trip was we took slapdash all the way onto the beach below over the reef you can see. the hike to the top was to allow seth to get a feel for the bay (no chart) and the early morning dingy ride at low tide allowed him to pick a precise route. the drive in was quite relaxing for us although a bit nerve wracking for him, its great to be on someone else's boat!. jamie had a huge spread of apps along with mimosas for the trip. in the end we had to cut our stay short as the beach boys wanted to launch para flights from our landing point. it was a great day and we will need to make sure we top it on a "palapa fun day"

we finally found the perfect little cove/sandy beach in the phi phi islands with just the right level of civilization. the south side of the island is crazy and rolly. fortunately we had this sorted by the time the slappers arrived. here is a photo of the sunset from their boat. we had turky sub sandwiches from this little palapa on the beach run by a local woman very good. as the only american in the group thanksgiving holiday celebration tends to take a back seat!

we found this great little secluded lagoon and anchored off it and dingied in. here is a picture of palapa through the opening. reminds me on the santa cruz island cave shot scott took way back when. classic thailand geography.

first tailand snorkel

11/21/2010, ko hi ya

we stopped at this island for lunch on the way up to the phi phi islands and had an amazing snorkel. here is palapa on a mooring just a few meters away from this amazing rock formation. you could actually swim under the rock through a hole in the middle behind palapa.

here we are at our first palapa bar in tailand. as it turned out he had just opened and we where his first customers. we planning to just get fuel today but noticed tailand was only 20 nm away so we decided it was time to get out of lankawi and malaysia. we never checked in so the check out process was painless. karli had some bot which was good as there was no atm on this island! it was amazing how the water color and clarity changed in our brief 20nm trip, should be some great snorkeling.

too much time at sea or dinner with homeless guy!
roger
11/18/2010, lankawi beach

so this morning after the girls went on a kayak/yoga trip to a deserted island beach we had a very disappointing brekfast (compared to the place yesterday with the best breakfast ever) i got chips and chicken nuggets and this was better than the runny eggs everyone else ended up. seth tried to bail on the homless guy dinner but in the end decided against it as he had already given him food. we did an epic booze provisioning run taking the dingy up to shore next to the liquor store. in the end we get 3 flats of beer 3 cases of australian, two cases of captin Morgans, a case of absolute and some radom other things. we figure we need this to last unitl mexico! i made two trips to shore in the dingy and using the fold up dolly carted the stuff all the way down the beach, would have made a great commercial for captain Morgans if only i had taken a photo. instead i had to use this shot of me sporting a new bandanna, apparently i need a hair cut.

around 4 or so homeless guy and seth came by with the most pathetic chicken i have ever seen. he was frozen solid and still had legs and a neck. i thawed him out, chopped his legs off and got him on the bbq. by now it was pouring rain and i was shuttling back and forth between slapdash and palapa to check on the chicken every 20 minutes. eventually he was perfectly done but i almost lost him as i started off on the dingy and they almost drove the dingy up on the swim step as i grabbed the chicken. made it over to slapdash with most of the chicken still in the tray but the dingy now slick with chicken fat. homeless dude made us a decent curry which coupled with my awesome bbqed chicken was delicious. homeless dude fell asleep with a beer in his hand (did i mention he was a recovering alcoholic as well) and seth and i stayed up late talking about the beach bar/garbage scow venture and sampling the new rum shipment.

lamb bbq

11/17/2010, lankawi beach

this morning seth and i returned to the scene of the crime after breky only to discover the bar was closed for a holiday. seth befriend this guy there who turned out to be an unemployed musician (aka homeless dude) who was a friend of the owner. we got permission to drink our beers there and i went out to the palapa for the polar bar and cold beers, after removing karli's splinter out of her foot i eventually returned. seth had made friends with the owner who by then had showed up. we talked about sailing and starting bars and his wife and kids in england (we was malaysian and tall with deadlocks). at the very end of the conversation we asked him if he had ever thought about sailing around the world and he said, oh yea i did that when i was younger, took the money my dad gave me for university and signed for some sailing school thing that happened to go around the world in 2 years. by then we had been invited to the private lamb bbq at the bar. you can see the automated fire fan system they have set up here and the actual lamb. some were during the evening seth invited the homeless guy over to make us dinner the next day (he tried to invite him to palapa but we suggested it would be more fun on slapdash). its great hanging out with the slappers we get much more "immersed" in the local culture, will se how tomorrow goes....

cheers, roger
