Left Isla Partida for Isla Angel de la Guarda at 1100. Wendy caught another Bonito. This seems to be all we are getting. We probably need to do some reef/bottom fishing for a change of diet. The south end of Angela de la Guarda has a large crescent shaped cove; white sand; picturesque; maybe 2 to 3 mile long. We anchored in 20’ 100’ off the beach and dingied in. We wanted to see the Brackish Lagoon on the other side of the beach. It was there; not much to see.
There is a little island about 1 mile away called Isla Estanque which actually connects to the main island with a usually submerged bar. On this island is the “pond” which is about 3 acres of almost fully enclosed cove hence the name pond or tank. We dingied over to check it out—narrow entrance with rocks and then it drops down to about 15-25 feet inside. Plenty of room for one boat. And that would be us! No other boats; our private oasis. On shore there was a nesting site for gulls. We looked at a couple of gull nests; they were not happy about our quick visit. Gray and spotted eggs about the size of chicken eggs on about 3 feathers and rock.
The next day I kayaked up to a second smaller pond and climbed the SE side of the island probably 300 ft to the top. On shore it is all desert, cactus but not moving things where I could see them. Except this bright blue bug that flew out of the ground a couple feet from me. A full 6 inch body looking like a giant wasp just in from Mardi Gras left me grateful that he kept on going.
The pond is bordered by maybe a 15’ rise on 3 sides and this hill on the 4th side. All this provided good protection from a storm swell coming in but little protection from most winds. And we were expecting a norther coming in for the next 2 days. We settled in and watched it come. Winds rose to the high 30s and low 40s over the next two days. But the winds waves never got to more that 2 ft in the “pond” and the wind kept the “bo bos” (small black flies) way.
