Left Tahaa and Raiatea for Bora Bora this morning. 20 mile run. No biggy. We got lucky and the skies turned gray and the wind came up to the 20 to 25 range and off we went. [Wendy might disagree with my description—“it was almost rough and windy and rained at times”]. There is a wide fringing reef at the south end of Bora Bora that you have to clear to get to the only entrance pass on the west side. It got a bit confusing at the entrance which was congested with small skiffs, fishing boats and a variety of other water vehicles, but it sorted out without much trouble. It’s always a bit confusing because unlike entering a typical bay with well-defined land masses, here you could be looking in across several anchorages only separate by invisible reefs that effectively act as land masses. Without a very respectable system of navigation markers, it could be very challenging. So—we anchored near a motu (little island) on sand looking at 270 degrees of ocean but protected by the reefs all around about 10 under the surface water.
