LITTLE FARMERS CAY, CAVE CAY AND GEORGE TOWN
11 December 2011 | George Town, Great Exuma
Cheryl - windy
We spent two nights on Little Farmers Cay at Farmers Cay Yacht Club and Marina. There is a restaurant and bar there. We had breakfast our first morning there. It’s very small but nice except for the showers. Based on Bill’s description of the shower I didn’t even bother to try it, something about the toilet drainage and the shower water being connected (ugh!) The bridge is out between the Yacht Club and the little Village so we had to take the long way, basically walking down the air strip on the island. No planes coming or going on both our walk to and from the village. We were the only ones at the Yacht Club. Weather, again, very windy.
We anchored off Cave Cay for 4 nights, once again waiting for the wind to die down. There is a marina there but no services except for fuel. We did dinghy in to get gas, not a soul around. Waited about 15 minutes and someone finally arrived on a four wheel drive. Went back to Little Farmers Cay and anchored for 2 nights. Finally got our weather to head to George Town.
We can’t go much farther on this side of the Exumas due to shallow water so we have to wait for the right conditions to go out one of the cuts to Exuma Sound to get to Georgetown. Let me explain about the right conditions – wind, tide, waves – all need to be in certain ranges, otherwise you can find your boat slapped against the rocks/reefs. With our little old 50 horsepower Perkins we don’t have the ability to power through big waves so here we sit. Other boats also sit waiting for the right conditions.
Let me define what I mean by windy – blowing 20-25 knots consistently all day and night. We can’t snorkel due to wind/waves, dinghy rides become challenging.
Made it out Farmers Cut and arrived in George Town on the 8th, currently anchored off Monument Beach. More info on George Town to follow.
