In the Wilds

25 November 2009 | Dungeness, Cumberland Island, GA
Carrie
Carl and I have been really enjoying our trip down south, travelling with "Just Imagine". We stopped in Georga from the outside to come to Cumberland Island. Even though we dislike the ICW in Georgia, because it's so shallow. After running aground, we anchored next to Plum Orchard and walked nearly nine miles looking at the beautiful Oak Trees. Our next stop, by far the best yet, was Dungeness. They say people have lived on this island for thousands of years but the island was never altered in any way. First occupied by Indians, then Spanish soldiers and missionaries around the mid-1500s. The ruins pictured above are what remain of the Carnegie Mansion, built by Thomas Carnegie, brother and partner of the steel magnate Andrew Carnegie. The home was constructed in 1884. We saw wild horses, armadillo, wild turkey's and lots of racoon tracks.
