Cruiserville, Bahamas
03 January 2010 | Georgetown, Great Exuma Island
Carl
After two great daysails down through the northern Exumas, we visited our friends Jim and Stef on S/V Eagle on Little Farmers Cay to experience a very warm and inviting community on one of the out-islands of the Bahamas. Anticipating some incoming weather and the need for Carl to find some antibiotics for a sinus infection, we left Little Farmer's Cay today and crossed out onto Exuma Sound for the first time to motor/sail for the day down to Georgetown on Great Exuma Island where we will encounter one of the largest concentrations of cruisers in the Bahamas. At anchor throughout Elizabeth Harbour over 100 cruiser vessels have already congregated and the community that I call Cruiserville has developed a life of it's own, with a daily information net on VHF radio and a very warm relationship between the cruisers and the local population. There is the opportunity to enjoy morning yoga and daily volleyball matches on the beach or to find someone to cut your hair or help you with a boat project question. Some vessels drop anchor and don't budge for weeks or even the entire season; others use the area as a base to work from while exploring more remote islands. We'll enjoy the area with Steven and Susan for a few days until they have to return home, then we'll decide where to visit next.
