Doubles

I'm really liking Trinidad. Although we are on the hard, there is plenty of work to be done which keeps us occupied. On a few occassions Cheryl and I catch a ride with Jesse James (yes it's his real name) of Members Only, a taxi service specifically for the cruisers. On Satrudays, Jesse starts picking up cruisers a 6:15 to take them into Port of Spain to the Fresh Market. This is where you can get all the fruits and veggies, meat and fish you want. Since this is our first time here, more seasoned cruisers take Cheryl and I under their wing and show us the ropes. Everyone agrees that while you are in Trinidad, you must have Doubles. "What are Doubles" I asked? Doubles is a street food in Trinidad. Usually sold on the side of the street by small vendors. It is a sandwich made with two flat fried breads, filled with curried chick peas or garbanzo beans, also known as channa. It's topped with a variety of spicy chutneys (so far mango is my favorite) and extra pepper sauce ( can you say HOT?) ranging from a dash "slight" to much more. Doubles are so popular that if you get to the stand anywhere after about 10:30, they are sold out. It's a very popular fast food. Most people eat it for breakfast, but we like it for a mid morning snack.
