Tropical Storm Tomas

30 October 2010 | St. Croix
Carrie
Too bad there's not a switch you can use to turn off Hurricane season on the 30th of October. Yes I realize we are talking about Mother Nature here but, really. Here we sit in St. Croix and find that we may have a problem with a tropical storm named Thomas. I mean tomorrow is November 1st!

At any rate, we went right to work talking to some of the locals about the best place to take the boat. We found out that they have a good hurricane hole called "Salt River" and if you have local knowledge you can probably get around the two reefs that cover the entrance to the inlet but it's not for the faint of heart. So while on the dock at St. Croix Marina, our first task was getting off the dock as the easterly swells had us pinned to the dock and smashing our fenders down to nothing while trying to hold the boat off.

Once off, we anchored just outside the marina just to get our bearings. After listening to the weather reports we decided to stay put as it looks as though the storm will pass about 180 miles south of us. We are somewhat protected here and should be OK. Hoping we dodge this bullet.
